A Matter Of Life And Death

Romans 6:1-14

Big Idea: In Christ we are dead to sin and alive to God: believe it and behave it!

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’”
– Romans 1:16-17

In Christ we are dead to sin:
1) Justification: dead to sin’s penalty (Romans 3:21-5:21)
2) Sanctification: dead to sin’s power (Romans 6:1-23)
3) Glorification: dead to sin’s presence (Romans 8:18-30)

Because I am dead to sin in Christ:
1) Embrace my new union and identity in Christ (v. 6-7)

“I have been crucified with Christ. It no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
- Galatians 2:20

Embracing my death to sin in Christ:
1) Means I no longer desire to sin
2) Means I no longer ought to sin
3) Means I am actively moving away from sin
4) Means I have renounced sin and disavowed sinful behavior
5) Means I rest my identity in the fact I am no longer deemed guilty of sin

2) Embrace my new master and freedom in Christ (v. 6-7)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come.”
– 2 Corinthians 5:17

How to kill sin in my life:
1) Pray over it
2) Confess it
3) Get accountability for it
4) Destroy it
5) Starve it
6) Replace it

3) Embrace my new life and purpose in Christ (v. 8-14)

How to walk in newness of life in 2026 and beyond:
1) Embrace Jesus myself (v. 8)
2) Embrace Jesus’ means (v. 9)
3) Embrace Jesus’ model (v. 10-11)
4) Embrace Jesus' mission (v. 12-14)
