Psalm 127
Big Idea: As We Trust In The Lord To Build The House We Can Rest In His Blessing Of It
Unless The Lord Builds It:
1) The Lord is the ultimate builder: depend on Him (v. 1-2)
2 wisdom warnings:
1) Without dependence on the Lord our working and watching is in vain (v. 1)
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
2) Without dependence on the Lord our activity and anxiety is in vain (v. 2)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5
2 antidotes for anxiety:
1) Trust the Lord to build it (v. 1)
2) Rest in the Lord as He watches over it (v. 1-2)
“Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.”
– Ecclesiastes 5:12
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
– Matthew 11:28-30
“Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”
– 1 Peter 5:7
2) The Lord is the greatest Giver: delight in Him (v. 3-5)
2 Reasons To Delight In The Lord:
1) Because children are a blessing from the Lord (v. 3)
"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
- Deuteronomy 6:6-9
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
– Ephesians 6:4
The impact of faithfully stewarding the blessings of our children:
1) When neither parent attends church: 81% of children will likely not attend church as adults
2) When only the mother attends church regularly: 39% of children will likely attend church as adults
3) When both parents attend church regularly: 74% of children will likely attend church regularly as adults
4) When only the father attends church regularly: 67% of children will attend church regularly as adults
2) Because children are a source of security and protection from the Lord (v. 4-5)
“Honor your father and mother”
- Ephesians 6:2a
