Romans 5:12-21
Big Idea: The Power And Consequences Of Sin Are Great, But The Grace Of God Through Jesus Christ Is Much More
1. The conflict: man’s sin brought death (vs. 12-14)
“For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
- I Corinthians 15:21-22
2. The contrast: Christ’s sacrifice offers life (vs 15-19)
Contrast of man’s sin versus Christ’s sacrifice:
a) Trespass and Gift (vs 15)
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
- Ephesians 2:8-9
b) Condemnation and Justification (vs. 16)
c) Death and Life (vs. 17)
d) Disobedience and Obedience (vs. 18,19)
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
- Philippians 2:5-8
3. The Conclusion: man’s sin is great, but God’s grace is much more (vs. 20-21)
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
- Romans 6:1-2
